Firstly, as the name suggests, the Residence Permit formalizes its legality in Portugal. So, you should get one as soon as you are in Portuguese territory and intend to stay for some time.

ART and ARP

In other words, in the case of the Temporary Residence Permit (ART), you can stay in the country for a specific period, normally one year, but renewable for periods of two years.

This is because this is a document and, like most documents, it has an expiration date. But don't worry, this doesn't mean you'll lose your permanent residency!

Any foreign citizen who meets certain requirements has the right to request AR. In fact, it is worth highlighting that you must make the request when you are in Portugal through SEF!

Furthermore, for each objective, such as study, work, investment, AR will have a different requirement and values. So, see what you need to make your request:

  • Valid residence visa;
  • Being in Portuguese territory;
  • Have a means of subsistence;
  • Accommodation;
  • Have a NISS;
  • Not have a custodial sentence of more than one year;
